Here in our own District 4-L5 we have two eyeglass recycle centers. The Hemet Lions Club operates one of them. The other is the Percy Parish Sight House in Rialto. Although both are operated primarily by the sponsor clubs as shown above no volunteers are turned away and all eyeglasses are accepted. The glasses are cleaned, graded by prescription, and packaged.
The glasses are then supplied to our Friends Across the Border project for use domestically and in Northern Mexico. Excess glasses are shipped to Lions in Sight for immediate shipment as needed around the globe. |

Lions Clubs International Foundation began the SightFirst program soliciting funds to be used specifically for eyesight programs around the world.. SightFirst is Lions' most ambitious and most successful initiative ever. Thanks to SightFirst, Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people, and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions. Sadly, 80 percent of the world's blind were needlessly without sight. Through SightFirst, and SightFirst II Lions have prevented blindness by supporting cataract surgeries, helping expand eye hospitals and clinics, educating the public, distributing sight-saving medication, training eye care professionals and establishing sustainable eye care systems in underserved areas. On average, about every $6.00 in donations has resulted in a person with vision restored or saved from blindness. |
